Dear friends,
As Christmas approaches, we are launching our annual appeal for destitute women and children in the All African Women’s Group (AAWG) — a self-help group of asylum-seeking women based at the Crossroads Women’s Centre. Every penny raised goes directly to the women and their families.
Since our first appeal in 2005, we have been deeply moved by people’s generosity — especially from those who give even when they have little themselves. Your solidarity makes a real difference.
This year, conditions for women and children have become even harsher as the cost of living continues to rise. Many are trapped in unsafe “asylum hotels” struggling to survive on £8.70 a week and dealing with food which is often inedible, out of date baby food, and no cooking facilities. Others are on “asylum support” of £49 a week and living in cold, mouldy flats or overcrowded hostels. Mothers describe that they and their children are constantly ill but when they try and get help they are dismissed.
Despite all this, women are refusing to be bowed down. In recent months we have been meeting together and heard how women speak up against racist and sexist attacks and organise collectively with others to protect themselves from far-right demonstrations. Women have also got together to challenge Home Office policies which discriminate and downplay the rape and other violence that women have suffered. Mothers in particular are rallying now to oppose new laws that restrict the right to family reunion which would mean that children are separated from their mothers for ever.
As you may know from previous years, many women have fled rape, domestic violence, and homophobia. Having a small amount of money over Christmas — enough to buy food, a warm coat, or a small gift for their children — brings joy and relief.
Last year, donations helped over 50 women, including 32 mothers, to celebrate Christmas with their children. One mother said:
“For the first time since we came to the UK, we celebrated like everyone else. My children laughed again. It gave us hope.”
Anything you can give, however small, will make a real difference.
With warm thanks and best wishes for a peaceful and just Christmas,
Niki Adams
